This exhibition consists of paintings by three artists, Kim Dae-won, Ha Chul-kyung and Kim Young-sam. Their work presents the art of Nam-do (the southern area of South Korea). 

Nature, as viewed by the Korean artist, is one of the philosophical foundations for the arts of the East. According to this tradition, all human beings live together in a state of harmony in nature—both with natural forces and each other. As the title suggests, Nostalgia Today is an endeavor to both reinterpret tradition and nature and reflect some of the aesthetic concerns of the present day. 

Kim Dae-won combines traditional painting techniques, a strong response to nature, and an awareness of western modernism in his work. Using a dynamic brushstroke and vivid color, the artist also incorporates elements of folk, religious, and national symbols in his work. Using the folk genre, such as tigers, mountains, and shaman, Kim emphasizes both their meanings and a graphic vigor in his compositions. He combines his connection to Korean Nam–do tradition (from Southern part of Korea) with a strong awareness of Western approaches to form, color and composition. 

Ha Chul-kyung’s paintings seem to immerse the viewer in nature. His paintings seem to breathe. Acutely described landscapes are often recalled from the artist’s childhood. They seem to surround us with the fluctuations of the natural world; leaves flutter in the wind, clouds move overhead, water rushes over rocks. In his use of the ink technique, he combines vivacity and delicacy which, while it records the changing aspects of nature, leave the viewer with the sense of a peaceful harmony with it. Pen, brush and India ink are transformed into living matter. 

Kim Young-sam, using a dynamic calligraphy of India inked creates a vigorous natural universe. While his subject matter is traditional landscape, his treatment seems generated by a vigorous, semi-abstract energy. His lively vocabulary of blotted, dry brushed, gestural and tonally varied marks generates an active, dynamic world.  He works broadly, creating a sense of vastness of space and forms, for instance, a swan, may be simply conveyed by an elegant squiggle of the brush. Kim combines a bold, semi-abstract approach with a strong respect for the poetry of nature and Korea’s pictorial tradition.

향수:  김대원, 하철경, 김영삼

이 전시는 한국 전통미술의 근원지인 광주지역을 중심으로 한 김대원, 하철경, 김영삼 3인을 통하여 구성해본 매우 정적인 전시이다. 

전통적 산수화가 지녀온 고고한 정신성은 자연이 인류의 정신적 고향이자 삶의 터전이라는 등식으로부터 출발하였다. 그리고 동양의 사유는 그 뿌리를 자연에 두고 있으며, 자연존중이 바로 인간과 생명을 생태학적으로 재 탄생시키는 “자연과 합일”로 설명하는 것이다. 작가 3인 모두 전통적 가치와 사유의 세계를 존중하면서 현대적으로 전통과 자연을 재해석하고자 노력해왔다.  

지암 김대원은 자연을 작업의 대상으로 탐미하면서 實景을 매우 중요한 작업의 화두로 설정해온 작가이다. 그의 작업의 정신은 언제나 전통에 두고 있으면서도 조형적으로는 현대적 재해석과 변용을 위하여 지속적인 실험을 거듭하고 있다.

한국 전통남화의 정신을 기조에 두면서 형식과 관념을 뛰어넘는 인상적이면서도 감각적인 화면을 구성하고 있다. 이러한 대담한 조형적 실험은 전통수묵화에 대한 새로운 지평을 열어 가는데 한층 진지한 작가정신을 드러내고 남도의 사색과 자유로운 조형미, 다른 한편으로는 매우 도전적이고 치열한 회화적 문법을 일궈 가는데 심혈을 기울이고 있다.

임농 하철경은 자연 속에서의 작업을 철저하게 지키면서 작업하는 작가이다.  전통적인 먹의 강약을 능숙하게 사용하고 있으며, 뛰어난 사실적 묘사력을 바탕으로 화면에 감동적 분위기를 연출하고 있다.  觀念보다는 實景을 존중하는 그는 매우 감각적이면서도 대상을 읽어내는 파괴력이 그의 작업에 대한 호소력을 읽게 한다. 그의 그림을 바라보면 이미 자연 속에 들어와 있는 것 같은 감흥에 젖어든다. 계곡에 물소리, 나뭇잎이 바람에 스치는 소리, 하늘에 떠있는 조각구름, 이모든 것들이 항상 평화로운 자연의 체온을 느끼게 해주는 잔잔한 함을 통하여 동양의 먹이 발산하는 무게와 미학적 표정을 읽게 해준다.

우송 김영삼은 전통 문인화의 원형을 철저하게 지키면서 사의에 집념하는 맑고 투명한 예술관을 가진 작가이다. 그의 작업은 맑고 투명하면서 특히 붓의 강하고 부드러운 움직임을 보여주는 절묘한 흐름을 견지한다. 그리고 문인화의 생명이라고 볼 수 있는 내면적 기운과 동양정신의 교훈을 안정된 구도에서 느끼게 하는 힘을 가지고 있다.  그의 작품은 문인화로의 교훈적 의미를 강조하면서 먹의 농담처리와 번짐의 효과를 세련되게 사용하고 색채에 있어서도 절제하면서 깊은 먹의 맛을 느끼게 하고 있다. 특히 여백의 공간성 극대화, 동양의 사유와 자연에 임하는 태도와 심미적 접근으로 그의 기운을 느낄 수 있다.
