The inhabitants of one of the largest cities in the world are exposed to inexhaustible stimuli of all kinds. In the presence of such a vast amount of fortuitous and random information, the free and playful association of images triggered the decision to publish a book on the experience of living in the Federal District.

One day the title came to us: ABCDF. Immediately thereafter the project became a dictionary, a repertory of images that referred to Mexico City, organized from A to Z. In this way, we began to build a list of words that, after several months, numbered more than 900. The artists, photographers, and writers that became involved in the project began to add their ideas to this extensive body of work, which gradually found its definitive form.

This project is a collective exercise in discovery. It is an attempt to understand the differing attachments and mysterious attributes that this city contains, as well as the intimate and affectionate experiences that it produces in its peoples. More than glorifying or denigrating the city, the intention was to explore what it means to live in an urban center of these dimensions. Although, the photographs, paintings, prints, engravings, videos, short films, animations, digital images, sounds, texts and everyday objects contain a personal viewpoint, they also contribute to creating a collective visual perspective.

From the beginning we knew that this project was going to achieve its full dimension in three formats: the intimate experience of a book, the interactive experience with a CD ROM that opened the doors to movement and the characteristic sounds associated with the city, and a collective experience. We envisioned the latter as an exhibition where the project would become a three-dimensional space in which the spectator would find multiple references to his or her everyday life.

We could not imagine a better place to exhibit a show containing the vision on Mexico City than the Queens Museum of Art: the museum is housed in the historical building that was the home to two world’s fairs and served as the original home of the United Nations General Assembly; the borough of Queens is the most ethnically diverse locale in the world; and New York City is perhaps the one city that could understand the breadth and depth of Mexico City.

The introductory gallery testifies to the importance of registering the daily life of a city. Since its beginnings, Mexico City has been seen as a grandiose and monumental settlement and it has been represented as such from the 16th century up until the present. The rest of the exhibition is divided by approximately 250 words that are distributed throughout the galleries in alphabetical order —from Abasto to Zoom.

The combined work of the Queens Museum of Art and Control Bureau showed us that by working in groups enterprises can be accomplished. Thanks to this energetic group, that was always present during the third stage of this project’s development, we were able to feel an affinity with the great masters who have passed through this magnificent place. Their support helped us through the hours spent working on the project and during all the most difficult decisions that we had to take.

We are grateful to all the artists, photographers, designers and collaborators who participated in the project. The book belongs to them. We thank them for their warmth and enthusiasm during these past three years.

The ABCDF project is the sum of the talent and dedication of those who created it. Above all, it is the reflection of the great deep-seated affection that so many of us feel for this place. After three years of research, we continue to be obsessed by the manifold references that appear before us on an everyday basis. We believe that what is shown here opens the door, or serves as a bridge, to all that this city stirs in us both today and in the future.

ABCDF Palabras de Ciudad

Los habitantes de una de las urbes más grandes del mundo estamos expuestos a un cúmulo inagotable de estímulos de todo tipo. Frente a tal cantidad de información fortuita y aleatoria, la asociación libre y lúdica de ideas e imágenes se convirtió en el motor ideal que accionó la iniciativa de hacer un libro sobre la experiencia de vivir en el Distrito Federal.

Un día apareció el título: ABCDF, e inmediatamente el proyecto se convirtió en un diccionario, un repertorio de imágenes referentes a la ciudad de México, ordenadas de la A a la Z. Así empezamos a construir sobre una lista de palabras que luego de varios meses llegaron a ser más de 900. Los artistas, fotógrafos y escritores que paulatinamente se sumaron al proyecto, fueron agregando sus propuestas a esta extensa enumeración que poco a poco encontró su forma definitiva.

Este proyecto es un ejercicio colectivo para descubrir y tratar de entender las múltiples formas del apego que inspira esta ciudad capital, sobre sus aspectos más entrañables, sobre lo íntimo y muy afectuoso que tiene. Más que denigrarla o denostarla, la intención fue ahondar en lo que significa vivir en un conglomerado de estas dimensiones. Las fotografías, pinturas, grabados, video, cortometrajes, animaciones, imágenes digitales, sonidos, textos y objetos de uso cotidiano, contribuyen, desde la percepción personal, a la mirada colectiva.

Desde el principio sabíamos que este proyecto iba a adquirir su plena dimensión en sus tres formatos: la experiencia íntima del libro; la interactiva, con un CD ROM que nos abre las puertas al movimiento y a los sonidos característicos e indisociables de la ciudad, y una experiencia colectiva. Concebimos esta última como una exposición, en la cual el proyecto se convierte en un espacio tridimensional donde el espectador se encuentra con múltiples referencias a su cotidianeidad.

No podíamos imaginar un mejor lugar para acoger una exposición sobre la ciudad de México que el Museo de Arte de Queens: el museo se alberga en el edificio histórico que era el hogar a dos ferias mundiales y sirvió como el hogar original de la asamblea general de Naciones Unidas; ya que la mirada de más de 200 artistas, además de estar enmarcada por un edificio histórico que le ha dado sentido cultural a esta ciudad, se encuentra en el corazón mismo de esta metrópoli, y a él acude un público de lo más amplio y diverso.

La sala de introducción da testimonio de la importancia de registrar la vida cotidiana de una ciudad que desde su inicio fue pensada como un asentamiento grandioso y monumental, y de cómo ha sido representada desde el siglo XVI a nuestros días. El resto de la exposición se divide en aproximadamente 250 palabras que se distribuyen en las salas conforme a un orden alfabético, de Abasto hasta Zoom.

El trabajo conjunto con el Museo de Arte de Queens y la Oficina de Controle fue una muestra de que sólo en equipo se hacen las cosas. En la Oficina de Controle terminamos totalmente encariñados con un equipo de trabajo impecable y que trabaja por amor al oficio y por el honor del Museo. Gracias a este equipo de dirección, administración, museógrafos, electricistas y custodios del Museo de Arte de Queens por su infinita paciencia y alegre entusiasmo. Siempre nos hicieron sentir tan importantes como los grandes artistas que han pasado por este magnífico lugar. Durante todo este proceso y a toda hora, en las decisiones más difíciles nos acompañaron y apoyaron.

Gracias a todos los artistas del proyecto, fotógrafos, diseñadores y colaboradores. El libro es de ellos, ellos son el libro. Gracias por su cariño y entusiasmo a lo largo de estos tres años.

ABCDF Palabras de Ciudad no hubiera podido convertirse en lo que esta memoria refleja sin el apoyo de todas las instituciones públicas y privadas, empresas y benefactores que se sumaron de muy diversas procedencias para lograr el montaje que aquí presentamos.

El proyecto total ABCDF es la suma del talento y dedicación de quienes formaron parte de él, pero sobre todo es el reflejo del enorme cariño y arraigo que tantos sentimos por este lugar. Luego de tres años de investigación, seguimos obsesionados por las múltiples referencias que nos salen al paso todos los días. Creemos que lo que aquí quedó abre puertas y sirve de puente a todo aquello que nos provoca y nos provocará siempre esta ciudad.
