Funds raised will provide for Panorama education programs, tours, signage and interpretation materials as well as the ongoing care, maintenance of the model. Funding will also help us to continually assess and determine what changes will need to be made. For example, we have been told that a street is backwards-this program helps us to learn about and eventually fix these mistakes.
You donation is very important to us
We encourage anyone to give at the amount they feel most comfortable to help us to care for the model. Suggested Adopt-A-Building donation levels range from $50 to “purchase” an apartment to $500 to “purchase” a school, library or firehouse to $2,500 for Neighborhood Maintenance. Sponsorship packages are also available at the $5,000 to $10,000 range.
Please tell us your story and send your request; we’d love to talk to you. We have been getting great feedback from New Yorkers all over the country and the world. Requests include: “I’d like to adopt the dog run in Tompkins Square Park”; “I’d like to ‘adopt’ my daughter’s school”; “I’d like to ‘adopt’ the rooftop where I met my husband during the blackout”; “I’d like to adopt Katz’s deli.” The answer is Yes!
How you help
The Panorama will remain in its original style
It is our mandate to maintain the architectural integrity of the model. Generic buildings (i.e. homes, brownstones, housing projects, schools, etc.), will remain as they are. Individual buildings will not be altered to reflect specific changes (i.e. Additions, renovations, building color, etc.)
Sponsorship
Donations in the range of $5,000-$10,000 will allow you to adopt “icons” already on the model (ie. Brooklyn Bridge, Airplane, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Central Park) and/or allow for the addition of new buildings in the style of the Panorama.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I “own” my building?
- You will be acknowledged for at least 5 years. Donors will be listed in the Panorama and on our web site. We invite you to see your name listed near the location in which you adopted. You may keep your “deed” forever.
What will you do with Shea Stadium?
- Shea Stadium will remain on view in the Museum’s World’s Fair display.
How will the Museum go about making updates? When?
- We will begin to work with sponsors to include the new developments since 1992.
- Pending funding, we will make gradual updates.
- City College School of Architecture, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture students will make the new models for the Panorama as part of an internship program.
What is the goal?
- The goal is to provide a funding stream that will allow for the continual care of the Panorama.
What if my block/building is transformed due to new updates?
- New York is ever changing City. Your donation would be continually acknowledged should your building no longer exist. However, we can allow you to choose a new place commensurate with your donation. Of course, you can keep your “deed” forever.
