Target Passport Fridays 2010: Taiwan

Friday, July 30, 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm, 2010

Leave your baggage at home and bring a picnic blanket out to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for Target Passport Fridays 2010, the 6th season of the Queens Museum of Art’s annual outdoor summer festival of international music, dance and film. This year’s journey around the globe begins in South Africa in honor of the World Cup, and includes stops in Colombia, Ecuador, South Korea, Taiwan, the Middle East, India, and Mexico. Each evening begins with live dance and music performances followed by the feature film screening after sunset.

JULY 30th SCHEDULE

Dance: Sun Son Theater‘ s name comes from the Chinese words for ‘body’ and ’sound’ — two main areas of artistic focus for the group. Inspired by the artistry of ancient music and dance forms, each member is a percussionist, singer, and dancer. They will present “Into The Flood,” a modern fable that combines elements of drama, body movements, singing, musical instruments, masks, and puppets to express our deep connection with the mother Earth.

Film:

OrzBoyz!/囧男孩 /Jiong nan hai (Ya-che Yang, 2008, 104 min, Mandarin with English ST)
“Orz” is an Asian emoticon/meme representing a kneeling figure, signifying rejection and despair. A perfect symbol for the two Taiwanese boys in this film nicknamed Liar Number. #1 and #2 by their exasperated teacher. With rocky home lives, they rely on their imaginations (and a little mischief) as they make the journey to adulthood. Deflty melding live action with animated scenes, the film captures the vivid fantasy lives of its two protagonists. Click to view Trailer

Co-presented with the Taipei Cultural Center & the Press Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York.
