Out of India: Contemporary Art of the South Asian Diaspora

In tribute to the 50th anniversary of the independence of India and the creation of Pakistan, Out of India: Contemporary Art from the South Asian Diaspora brings artists from what was colonial India together with artists of South Asian descent from other parts of the world, including Britain, the United States, Thailand and Canada. While some of the artists in the exhibition had direct experience of colonialism, most artists respond to a "denationalized" condition, the increased permeability of boundaries between Asian Americans and "Asian Asians," and the diasporic perspective of Asians living all over the world.

Essays by Jane Farver (Curator) and Radha Kumar.

EXHIBITION DATE:
December 8, 1997 - March 22, 1998
