QMAil: August 2005
Welcome to the first edition of QMAil, the Queens Museum of Art's online newsletter. Intended to keep you updated on the exhibitions, concerts, films, performances and talks we've been planning for you, each QMAil will provide you with a taste of the month ahead. All the events are free with the museum's suggested admission, and we hope you'll join us.
Throughout August the QMA celebrates summer with Down the Garden Path: The Artist's Garden After Modernism, an exhibition that crushes the image of the garden solely as a peaceful sanctuary. A look at how contemporary artists have used gardens to promote various ideologies will definitely change the way you envision the garden. On the other hand, to take advantage of beautiful evenings under the stars, we've launched Passport Fridays, our Friday evening outdoor film, dance and music series that brings the world's cultures out into our backyard, Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Details on these and other programs are below and on our web site.
We admit that there may be some glitches with QMAil as we get going, so bear with us and please contact us with comments, problems or suggestions. Thanks and enjoy the rest of the summer.

The garden has always been considered a quiet sanctuary from the rigors of everyday life, but artists have also seen the garden as a vehicle for expressing ideas beyond the idyllic. Down the Garden Path: The Artist's Garden After Modernism presents a broad range of materials that refer to gardens as points of departure to understand history, politics, and our relationship to nature. From models by modernist masters and sketches by contemporary art mainstays, to living works by emerging artists and outdoor installations in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the exhibition calls for a redefinition of the role of the garden.

Set against the backdrop of beautiful Flushing Meadows Corona Park and the majestic Unisphere, the Passport Fridays series brings together organizations and individuals for evenings of free dance, music, and film screenings that celebrate the cultural diversity and artistic vitality of Queens, New York City, and more broadly, the worlds that exist within the borough.
Each Friday begins with dance performances from the QMA's 3rd Annual Dance In Queens Choreographers Residency presented with TOPAZ Arts. It continues with live musical performances originating in the same country as the evening's feature film presentation. The first three weeks highlight films that present complex relationships and social realities through the imaginative eyes of children. The second half showcases the best of Asian and African action/adventure films, each with breathtaking backgrounds and amazing stunts. Each feature film is preceded by short films by local filmmakers. Freestyle Arts will also be on hand to engage audiences in interactive art activities. PASSPORT FRIDAYS lets you travel the world in six weeks. Just bring a picnic, and leave your baggage at home...
Passport Fridays is made possible with the generous support of our sponsors: Ford Foundation, Institute for Museum and Library Services, Independence Community Foundation, Commerce Bank
