You can use these questions as points of departure when discussing the work of Yue Minjun.

  1. Why might an artist want to paint someone who is grinning?
  2. If you are grinning, does that mean you are happy?  Think of times when someone might grin and not be happy.
  3. How do these grinning people make you feel?
  4. How can someone see the world with his or her eyes closed?
  5. What happens to your face when you grin?
  6. What makes people laugh?
  7. What do you think when you see someone laugh?  How does it make you feel?
  8. What colors do people use to connote happiness and what colors remind you of sadness?
