Post-Midnight: Artists Respond to "After Midnight"

"Post-Midnight” is a series of artist responses to After Midnight, the current exhibition of modern and contemporary art from India. In the interest of presenting audiences with multiple ways of reading and interpreting the works in the exhibit, we have selected artists who can create interactive experiences for our museum’s publics. We approached artists working in various disciplines–spoken word, dance, sound–in hopes that the works in the exhibition might inspire varied interpretive forms.

Entering it’s 19th season, Young Dancemakers Company is a unique free summer performing ensemble of teens. The company of 16-18 young dancers, directed by Alice Teirstein, are drawn from New York City’s public high schools city-wide and selected by audition. Throughout July, urban youth will create a concert of their own choreography, based on meaningful personal and social themes, in daily intensive training and rehearsal sessions, starting at the 92nd Street Y in a new collaboration with DEL (Dance Educators Lab) and then moving up to the spacious studios of the Fieldston School, in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The completed concert of original works will tour in free performances throughout the city for thousands of young people and adults.

The young dancers will develop new choreography inspired by the artwork in the After Midnight exhibition based on earlier visit to the galleries and share their new movement pieces with the public, followed by several other works from their regular repertoire.
