Order and disorder are two opposite poles that characterize much of human effort. These contrasting qualities are vividly apparent in the fine arts. Disorder, in our usage, pertains to art that deals with upheaval, restlessness and a typically emotional approach. Order, by contrast, produces an art of reason and structure. This disparity can be found in works from the Renaissance up to our own times. In this series of slide and gallery talks, we focus on certain periods and consider those artists whose work strongly personifies each approach. The last meeting is an optional visit to see the show: “Chaos and Classicism: Art in France, Italy and Germany, 1918-1936,” an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum.
The Looking Series is organized by Miriam Brumer, former Coordinator of Adult Programs at the Queens Museum of Art and a practicing artist.
