Looking Series: LOOKING AT THE CHANGING APPROACH TO THE BODY IN ART
Thursday,March 25, QMA Theatre

In this series of six slide talks, we consider the many ways the body has been referenced in art. Often, it is approached as a physical presence described with clinical and respectful accuracy for its own sake. Nevertheless, while the body is one of the main subjects used in painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video and mixed-media, it is not always the main focus of the work. Sometimes it is a spiritual symbol or stand-in for a time and place. Often it serves as a vehicle for the expression of an idea, emotion or point of view and, even more dramatically, has been used as a starting point for extreme distortion, almost eradicated through abstraction. As we look at these various approaches, our aim is to understand the motivations behind them.
On this day, we will consider the body as a barometer of time and place.
The Looking Series is organized by Miriam Brumer, former Coordinator of Adult Programs at the Queens Museum of Art and a practicing artist.
